Fixed teams: everyone plays everyone once
- Total games for n teams: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2. For example, 8 teams play 28 games.
- Rounds when every match has a court: n − 1 (even n) or n (odd n, one team rests each round).
- With c courts, each round has at most c games, so you need at least total games ÷ c rounds.
| Teams | Games | Rounds (enough courts) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 |
| 5 | 10 | 5 |
| 6 | 15 | 5 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 |
Rotating partners (doubles)
- Players on court per round: 4 × courts (or fewer if you don't have enough players).
- Sit-outs per round: players − 4 × courts used.
- For everyone to partner everyone once, each player needs players − 1 games. With 8 players on 2 courts that's exactly 7 rounds.
How RallyMatchup keeps it fair
For fixed teams we use the circle method: one team stays still while the others rotate, which guarantees each pair meets once. For rotating partners, each round we choose sit-outs (most-rested players play first) and then search many arrangements. We keep the one with the fewest repeat partners, then the fewest repeat opponents. Repeats are penalized more each time they happen, so they are spread across players rather than stacked on one pair.
